Indianlife Dal Mix

Thank you guys so much for your nice comments on my post yesterday!! I really appreciate your support. I had another good day today, full of exercise. I went back to InYoga, which I reviewed a couple months ago , for the Community Flow class. It was a pretty fast-paced one-hour class, instead of the usual 90 minute classes. I liked that because my main problem with yoga is getting bored. The teacher, Tara, really mixed it up and kept me interested and challenged. She also played good music instead of the regular yoga hippie crap. So I liked it! It was a full-body workout and she also pushed to make it more cardio by having us do all these silent hops in different poses. This afternoon I taped an audition for a feature film (it was requested) and did a bunch of acting administrative business. I also set up a visit to Kansas in a few weeks -- I'm going to see my dad, stepmom, and baby brother! Yay! I actually need to see my endocrinologist, which is why I'm going, but the family ...

Neon Green is Sexy; Yellow Split Pea Soup with Broccoli

I had such an action-packed weekend that I have three blog posts ready to go! I'll be featuring more cute outfits, some awesome recipes, and... more. Today we'll talk about SOUP (I post a lot about soup...) and I'll show you another bar-hopping outfit. I went out three nights in a row this weekend! And because it's me, that means lots of dancing and no drinking. On Friday, after sleeping in, wiped out from my Voyeur visit on Thursday night, I had sketch comedy rehearsal and that night I went to a bar called Rush Street in Culver City with some actor friends. It's a sports bar, so a totally different feel from Voyeur. First I tried a green shirt with some jeggings and heels. But I wasn't feeling it so I tried on a neon green dress I've had since fifth grade. Can you tell how short this thing is? So short, it's more like a shirt now. So I paired it with some leggings and Chucks. Can I just be self-indulgent for a second and say I love my hair? This is Fri...

Proof That I Am Insane; Mushroom Dal

I booked another student film! I'm so excited! The only downside is that it's filming on Halloween so I'll have to scale back my partying and change my costume. I was going to be Machete but now I can't do the requisite fake tattoos so now I don't know what to be. I've had a very busy week. I had an audition on Monday, two on Tuesday, and one yesterday. I have another tomorrow and one Saturday but I didn't have any today so I did a mailing to casting directors, ran some errands, and finally did some cooking! I bought this new type of coffee the other day because it was cheap. It's good, basic dark coffee. But I've been trying to figure out whether you get more for your money if you buy whole bean or pre-ground coffee. Does anyone know?? And now... the proof that I am insane. My favorite garlic and onion seasoning was on sale for a DOLLAR (it's usually more than $2.50) so I bought out the shelf. And I went to Target today to buy some gum an...

Dehydrated Sweet and Spicy Indian Cauliflower

First, happy National Coming Out Day! I am coming out as a straight ally and I hope there will come a day when people don't have to hide who they are. And if you're stuck in high school or a conservative area and you're miserable, it will get better . Being an adult is the cat's pajamas and you can live your life and surround yourself with supportive, loving people. I felt like using my dehydrator today so I adapted this samosa recipe I blogged about here . If you recently got a dehydrator and are a little intimidated, this recipe is perfect because it's really easy and you can't mess it up. Dehydrators are definitely not a necessity, even if you eat 100% Raw, but they are fun and they create some lovely textures you can't get with traditional oven baking. Dehydrated Sweet and Spicy Indian Cauliflower 1 head cauliflower, separated into tiny florets 1/2 cup mushrooms, sliced 1/2 cup snap peas, sliced 1 tbsp tamarind paste or fruit jam 1 tsp mustard 1 ts...

Indian-Spiced Barley Stew

Record-breaking heat is ripping through LA right now. It was 113 degrees today in the Valley. OMG! So of course I did something that makes no sense and I made soup. I would have liked to add an onion and some celery but I just used what I had on hand. Indian-Spiced Barley Stew 1 cup uncooked barley 1 cup yellow split peas 10 medium carrots, chopped 5 cups water 1 tbsp mustard 1 tbsp umeboshi plum paste (optional, sub for soy sauce) 1/4 cup chopped dulse (optional) 1 tbsp garam masala 1 tsp turmeric 1 bunch basil, chopped If using an onion, brown for a few minutes in a soup pot. Then add barley, split peas, carrots, and water. Watch water as the soup cooks and add more as necessary to keep desired consistency. Add seasonings and basil at the end. Makes about 10 1-cup servings. It's really good!! I'm going to get coffee with my mom's co-worker's cousin tomorrow morning. I love those distant connections! We're going to Urth Caffe so I'll be sure and t...

Indian-Spiced Yellow Split Pea Soup

Ooh do I have a recipe for you today! It may not look like much but believe me, it is. So I told you about my audition and booking yesterday (yayy). After the audition and my miraculous escape from a parking ticket, I went to the Meet Market for its last day of business. I had heard really good things, especially about the weekend brunch, but I'd never gone. Then I read on Quarrygirl that it was closing yesterday. I was only five minutes away and I heard that their grocery items were 50% off, so I checked them out. I ended up buying one desserty-thing that I plan on giving as a gift to someone and two of these to live in my car and serve as emergency snacks. I was only a couple minutes away from Nature Mart Bulk Bin, and I had planned ahead by bringing my empty Dr. Bronner's hand soap dispenser. I've only been to the Bulk Bin one other time and I noticed that they sell bulk Dr. Bronner's soap so I planned to come back when my dispenser was empty. Nature Mart is ...
