Continental Drift: Cagematch Champions!

Image
My job and general lifestyle doesn't have a consistent schedule, but I've fallen into a bit of a routine recently. Here's a little taste of my general schedule over the last three weeks. Mondays: Go to Harold Night at UCB! Tuesday: Internship at UCB Wednesday: Improv 401 class, then practice with my team Badge Patrol I have a couple hours between class and practice, so I've been walking to Whole Foods and getting some veggies from the salad bar as my special Wednesday treat. :) If you're careful with your purchases, you can get a good dinner for $3-$5. Spicy cauliflower and peas! Ratatouille put on top of salad. Who cares Three weeks in a row. Mmmm that Indian-style cabbage and peas was delicious. I wish I could eat all my meals at Whole Foods. Thursday: I've been going to the 11th Hour improv show pretty consistently, and they've been having some great shows. A couple weeks ago Donald Glover (from Community) showed up as a surprise guest and put on a great ...

First Continental Drift Improv Show!

Image
Can you guess what I did this week? If you guessed improv, producing, working on set, and going to networking events, you would be right! Monday? PA on set, Tweetup. Tuesday and Wednesday, PA during the day, improv maniac by night. Thursday I went to a couple of networking events and did various fascinating budget-related producing work. On Friday I had my first show with my improv team, Continental Drift ! If you're in LA, like us on Facebook and come to our next show. :) We had a 30-minute slot, which is very long for an improv show, but it was fun and it never felt like it dragged. An amazing, supportive friend of mine came and took pictures. Thank you! That pictures is of me being a very short person at a basketball tryout, BTW. And this is me mediating a speed date in a very intimidating way. Because people will fall in LOVE at my speed-dating sessions, damn it! Performing is so fun. I do wonder how serious my mental problems are that I feel such a need for lots of people to l...

Introducing Mini Movie Reviews

Image
My diet has mostly consisted of this and this And I've been feeling great! Mmm, I missed cereal. Yesterday I went to an event at The Actors Network and a workshop with the associate casting director of 90210. I love that show and it was fun to hear everyone read scenes from it. In between those events I stopped in Whole Foods and bought a few necessities. I had a coupon for $3 off Alba Acnedote products so I bought this scrub. I've talked before about using coconut oil as lotion . I bought one jar in March and it just ran out. This jar cost $7, making it about 49 cents per oz - that's approximately half the price per ounce of most lotions. And lastly, I'm going to try out this toothpaste that was on sale. I realize I've been talking about movies a lot lately, so I decided to make a new feature. May I introduce: Mini Movie Reviews Yesterday I watched two movies - first up, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. This adaptation of the play by Tom Stoppard exp...

Fashion Friday: Beyond Skin

Image
I had an unexpectedly busy day yesterday. I was at The Actors Network learning about publicity from 4:30 to 6 when I got an e-mail saying a last-minute spot had opened up in a free casting director workshop from 9 to 11. I never pass up free so I took the time to catch up on some errands, including dawdling at the West Hollywood Whole Foods for about an hour and a half. I saw frozen Tofurky pizzas - I didn't buy any but it was just kind of a "Hey, we have what the cool kids have" moment. Oh, you like frozen pizza with Italian sausage? There's a vegan version of that! I got some salad/hot bar food for dinner. That's multiple types of salad with some kind of veggie goulash. I know people talk about Whole Foods being expensive, but this cost me $5 and I'd rather eat this delicious cornucopia of veggies than a "five dollar footlong." And now, I'd like to introduce a new little feature I've devised -- Fashion Fridays. I've written a litt...

Frankie, Alice, Butternut Squash, and Beets

Image
Tonight I was fortunate enough to go see a screening of Frankie and Alice, Halle Berry's new movie, and a Q & A with Ms. Berry herself. Her performance is getting Oscar buzz even though the film doesn't come out in LA until December 10th and in the rest of the country until February. I won't tell you anything about the movie besides that it's based on a true story of a woman in the 70's struggling with multiple personality disorder. I just have to say again - I love the 70's! Ahhh, the clothes, the makeup, the interior furnishings... I just want to live in it. And oh. my. gosh. Halle Berry is so gorgeous in person. I'd never found her to be drop-dead gorgeous until I saw her in real life. I was only in about the fourth row so I was fairly close. Her skin is incredible, and so luminous, and she wasn't wearing a ton of makeup like some celebrities do. She's just naturally beautiful and obviously takes great care of herself. What an inspir...

I'm Thankful for the Whole Foods Salad Bar!

Image
I had a nice Thanksgiving. My roommate thought I was lying when I said I didn't want to celebrate and so she thinks I'm crazy/sad/anti-social but really I had a good time. I worked out, caught up on some TV and movies, got some work done, read blogs, and went to Whole Foods for lunch. I watched Fringe and The Office on Hulu and the movies Valley Girl and I Am Love on Netflix instant view. Tilda Swinton learned Italian for I Am Love and is getting Oscar buzz. If you like artsy foreign films, check it out. I also made some postcards to send to acting contacts with this on-set photo from Big Shoes to Fill: But I like this one, too - While I was perusing the salad bar at Whole Foods a guy came up and struck up a conversation with me and asked for my number! In case you're worried about my safety, I did not give it to him. But I'll take the ego boost anyway. This roasted beet and butternut squash dish was both on sale and completely delicious. I'm going to try ...

On-Set Eats

Image
I had a great and busy weekend working on Big Shoes to Fill. It's a short film where I play a girl encouraging her brother to tell our parents that instead of being a lawyer, he wants to be a clown. Here's a picture of my on-screen family. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday were all 12-hour filming days. But that doesn't mean I was only there for twelve hours! For example, Sunday I woke up at 7 to work out, get ready, and drive to set, call time was 9 AM, and we wrapped at 9:30. All the crew was still there when I left at 10:30. So, long days. We did have catering and craft services, but of course a lot of it was unhealthy and/or not vegan. But with a mix of catering and my own food, I managed to feed myself and stay pretty healthy. Friday I brought a big jar of roasted brussels sprouts with me and ate those as a snack. For lunch they bought me a salad with tofu from Whole Foods. For dinner (at 10 PM) when I got home I ate something I bought at the Santa Monica Co-Op on...

Grind-Your-Own Chocolate Peanut Butter!?

Image
On Thursday I had coffee with a friend at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf and brought my mug to get ten cents off. I think it should be MORE. And I want FREE REFILLS. But that's the Hoosier in me talking... I had some peas with barbecue sauce and nutritional yeast. It sounds kinda gross and I'm still not totally sold on peas that aren't in Indian food or soup but it's a good seasoning combo. Friday I had an audition and then I drove all the way to Whitter (aahhh it's farrrr) to shoot a student film. I had a so much fun! The script was well-written and everyone I worked with was great. Today we shot another scene at Park La Brea in the sweltering 90 degree heat and then I went to the Whole Foods by the Grove. OMG! This is my new favorite Whole Foods! 1) It is big 2) They had lots of free samples 3) HUGE bulk section 4) Lots of stuff OK so those reasons may be repetitive. But I dislike that some of the other big WF's don't even have a bulk section or it ...
