Spring Break Day 3: Santa Monica and Malibu

Image
We went to Santa Monica today, because it was supposed to be our warmest weather. We got there around 1 to some weird, intense fog. I've never seen fog like that -- we couldn't see the ocean from the beach! We walked down the beach to Muscle Beach, where exhibitionists practice strange forms of exercise. My brother did some flips on the rings: His girlfriend (a gymnast) showed off her mad upper body strength. She climbed all the way up the rope without using her legs . And that rope is really high up! I can do neither of these activities. Way to make me feel out of shape. We had a picnic of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that I made. We explored the foggy beach... But then the sun came out! We drove up the PCH to Malibu for no reason, just because it's beautiful. It was in the seventies and we just blasted the radio with the windows down and enjoyed how beautiful California is. We took a random Canyon road that went up and up until we found a really cool view over the ...

Ich Liebe Sauerkraut and the Santa Monica Co-Op

Image
I've been living off my Curry Veggie Stew for the last couple days and feeling great! It's so good for you it's like injecting vitamins into your bloodstream. I've had a couple of great actor days! Yesterday I went to a seminar, a talk at The Actors' Network, and a casting director workshop and today I had a meeting with a manager. The manager meeting was in Santa Monica so I went to my favorite grocery store in the world (so far... I'm on a mission), the Santa Monica Co-Op. It's not a huge store but it has an amazing selection with a fantastic bulk section, bulk spices, great produce, a hot bar, pre-made foods, Raw foods, makeup, personal products.... Here's a small selection of bulk items I bought - Cinnamon, nutritional yeast, garam masala, and sun-dried tomatoes. I also got onion flakes, some vegan jerky bites to keep in my car for emergency food, potatoes, kale, apples, and broccoli. I love that they have spices like garam masala in bulk as w...

Santa Monica and New Salad Dressing

Image
Simple, short post today. Yesterday I went to Santa Monica with a friend new to LA because he needed to see the ocean, even though it was cold! Today I spent hours doing laundry (seriously), finally talked to my mom, called Time Warner cable to fix our internet (blahh), watched Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, and went to a free panel at SAG about agents and managers. For dinner, I had a nice salad of spinach, mixed greens, cucumber, carrot, celery, green onion, a big tomato, red pepper, and some of this new dressing: It was OK. I just bought it because they didn't have the balsamic dressing I like. I have an audition tomorrow and I'm going to cook up that big eggplant I bought at the farmers market. Santa Monica Farmers' Market and Co-Op, Kundalini Yoga

Image
Yesterday I went to the Santa Monica Farmers' Market, as is quickly becoming a weekly ritual. I bought 2 avocados, 3 cherimoyas, a bag of kiwis, lots of mixed greens, and fresh peas. Then I went for an hour-long walk along the beach. So nice! After the beach I went to the Santa Monica Co-Op, which I hadn't been to before. I was pretty devoted to our co-op in Bloomington (Bloomingfoods) and this one was like Bloomingfoods but bigger and with a lot more vegan stuff. I was so excited and went a little purchase-crazy. They have a fantastic bulk section as well as a bulk spices section, which I hadn't seen anywhere in LA yet. I don't want to buy a new bottle every time I run out of spices (and I run out of cinnamon a lot because I loooove it). I bought some St. John's Wort tea, some Zukay raw dressing, some garlic sauerkraut, some cultured veggies (it's like sauerkraut of broccoli, carrots, etc.), and yacon powder. I ran out of my beloved maca and decided t...

Brunch at Euphoria Loves Rawvolution

Image
I had a good, salad-filled weekend. I read a post on Healthy Happy Life where the author, Kathy, said she lives a salad-a-day lifestyle. I really like that. Not only do I like salad, but I like the idea of living a lifestyle where I eat salad every day. That reminds me of a passage I read in Raw Food for Real People that talked about how the author learned to quit smoking. Instead of asking if he wanted to have a cigarette, which he could rationalize as being "just one," he asked himself if he wanted to be someone who smokes. And he did not. This mindset can be applied to anything -- maybe I want to eat brownies at midnight, but do I want to be someone who eats brownies at midnight? No, I do not. I want to be the kind of person who exercises every day and eats salad. I made myself kind of a "vanilla milkshake" this weekend out of almond milk, a little bit of date paste, vanilla powder, and maca. It was good and I liked how frothy it looked after a little ...

Farmers' Market Food Explosion

Image
I bought so much freakin' food at the Santa Monica Farmers' Market today. I actually made a list: Salad mix, chard, a cauliflower, a 5 pound bag of oranges (for 3 dollars, mind you - and these are gooood oranges), a fennel bulb, 3 baby artichokes, sugar snap peas, broccolini, apples, mint and basil, cherimoyas, an avocado, strawberries, asparagus, and walnuts. As if that wasn't enough, I went to Whole Foods afterwards, where I bought jungle peanuts, hemp seeds, grape tomatoes, flax seeds, cacao nibs, frozen berries and corn, kelp noodles, zucchini, umeboshi plum paste, dry lentils, tamarind pods, a yellow pepper, oat groats, spelt berries, and coconut water. SO much food. I was pretty excited to see the raw jungle peanuts, which were a new addition to our bulk section. I just heard of these for the first time this week -- apparently they are the only kind of peanut that is safe and tasty to eat raw (aflatoxin free). They are red, but I tried a couple and they taste jus...
