Ich Liebe Sauerkraut and the Santa Monica Co-Op

Image
I've been living off my Curry Veggie Stew for the last couple days and feeling great! It's so good for you it's like injecting vitamins into your bloodstream. I've had a couple of great actor days! Yesterday I went to a seminar, a talk at The Actors' Network, and a casting director workshop and today I had a meeting with a manager. The manager meeting was in Santa Monica so I went to my favorite grocery store in the world (so far... I'm on a mission), the Santa Monica Co-Op. It's not a huge store but it has an amazing selection with a fantastic bulk section, bulk spices, great produce, a hot bar, pre-made foods, Raw foods, makeup, personal products.... Here's a small selection of bulk items I bought - Cinnamon, nutritional yeast, garam masala, and sun-dried tomatoes. I also got onion flakes, some vegan jerky bites to keep in my car for emergency food, potatoes, kale, apples, and broccoli. I love that they have spices like garam masala in bulk as w...

Salade de Lentilles et Chou Frisé

I booked a job! Yay! I had a great weekend, capped off by the booking today. But let me start at the beginning. Friday night I got home, unpacked, and watched Children of a Lesser God. Stupid title aside, I really liked it. The acting was great and because I studied ASL in college, I had a really great time trying to keep up with the ASL dialogue. Ahh I love sign language, it's so expressive. On Saturday morning, I had to go grocery shopping because I had left myself absolutely nothing to eat in the apartment. So I walked down to Whole Foods and bought a delicious array of produce. There you see almond milk, two plums, a bunch of basil, two yellow onions, yellow split peas, french green lentils, one bunch of kale, one bunch of romaine, two yellow potatoes, one heirloom tomato, brussels sprouts, two golden beets, one red beet, sundried tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, a turnip, carrots, and celery. The damage? Less than $30. This is my proof that Whole Foods does not have to be ex...

I'm Home!

Image
Well I'm home from my trip to the Midwest. I realized I hit up Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, and Nebraska in one trip (plus Arizona and Nevada if you count plane stops!). Maybe not everyone's idea of a thrilling getaway, but I had a great time. Now I've got a busy week coming up - I have an audition tomorrow in which I have to speak Italian, going to a sports bar with some other people to watch the Broncos game tomorrow, an audition on Monday that will be 100% improv, an event at The Actors Network on Tuesday to learn how to decipher TV production charts, and then another Broncos game on Thursday! It's shaping up to be an exciting week. The last couple days in Kansas were a little bittersweet, as I've been trying to absorb as much of baby brother as I can. I've been lucky enough to witness most of his big milestones before - I was there when he got his bottom teeth, his top teeth, when he learned to crawl, and when he started walking just last week. We just took...

Pad Thai and Dark Leafy Greens with Sesame Miso Dressing

Image
As I mentioned yesterday, I spent lots of time thinking of what recipes to make for my dad and step-mom this week. So I came up with some recipes and tried to think in threes. Now as a vegan I'm very used to eating a meal centered around vegetables and I'm happy with just one meal in a bowl. But I know lots of people grow up with the plate divided into threes - meat, starch, and vegetable. My mom raised us that way (though for lunch sometimes the third section was fruit) and lots of people don't feel like their meal is complete without it. So after I made my list I went with my step-mom to the Merc, the local co-op. She hadn't been there in years, since the last time I had dragged her there. We got lots of good produce and when we came home I got down to work. I made Pad Thai with a side of Dark Leafy Greens with Sesame Miso Dressing. Both recipes are from The Vegan Table . The Pad Thai is on page 26 and the greens are on page 37. For my greens I used kale. ...

Kale, Corn, and Maitake Stir-Fry

Image
I had a wilty-looking bunch of kale and a somewhat old corn on the cob in the fridge yesterday so I made a nice stir-fry. I first put in a bunch of garlic, my remaining maitake mushrooms and cut the corn off the cob right into the pot. Then I tore the kale off and added it and seasoned it all with some Caribbean jerk seasoning. Then I ate half of it it like colcannon, mashed with a potato and nutritional yeast. In the afternoon I went with my dad to Home Depot because he needed to buy some crown molding for his room. It was 17 feet long and he just stuck it out the back of his truck! After this picture was taken he tied it together with orange bungee cords so it would be visible to traffic but it still felt like a pretty silly thing to do. For dinner I made myself a lovely salad and talked to my mom on Skype! There's lettuce, radishes, carrots, mixed beans, parsley, chives, and red bell pepper, and I ate it with more Indian curry hummus. Today I had the rest of my kale/corn/mush...
