Ich Liebe Sauerkraut and the Santa Monica Co-Op

Image
I've been living off my Curry Veggie Stew for the last couple days and feeling great! It's so good for you it's like injecting vitamins into your bloodstream. I've had a couple of great actor days! Yesterday I went to a seminar, a talk at The Actors' Network, and a casting director workshop and today I had a meeting with a manager. The manager meeting was in Santa Monica so I went to my favorite grocery store in the world (so far... I'm on a mission), the Santa Monica Co-Op. It's not a huge store but it has an amazing selection with a fantastic bulk section, bulk spices, great produce, a hot bar, pre-made foods, Raw foods, makeup, personal products.... Here's a small selection of bulk items I bought - Cinnamon, nutritional yeast, garam masala, and sun-dried tomatoes. I also got onion flakes, some vegan jerky bites to keep in my car for emergency food, potatoes, kale, apples, and broccoli. I love that they have spices like garam masala in bulk as w...

Baked Tofu Sticks!

I had a great/exhausting weekend. I volunteered at ActorFest (like Comic Con for actors) from 7:30-5 on Saturday and my whole weekend was pretty much structured around it. I tried to go to bed early on Friday but it was a total failure and I only got four hours of sleep. So then I was super wired on adrenaline all day Saturday from the lack of sleep I was even doing wall pushups during my rare downtime. I had a great volunteer gig - I got to escort the VIPs from check-in to the green room and I met some of my favorite casting directors! After catching up on sleep, I had two auditions on Sunday. Yesterday I had Power Group and then I was supposed to have an audition for a student film - but when I got there, nobody else was! And I was definitely on time and in the right place! I texted the student but by the time she texted me back I had left. I figured if the production was that unprofessional from the beginning, I don't want to be a part of it. Today I spent all day making...

Instant Shepherd's Pie; Sexism is Alive and Well in America

I made money today! I love that. I realize that most people make money about five days a week but for me it's much more infrequent and thus more satisfying. Anyhow, yesterday I went and saw TV director Guy Bee at The Actors' Network - his most recent work is Supernatural. Then I came home and prepared for my evening audition at 7:30. Right before I left, the weather got all crazy. First I heard the loudest crack of thunder echoing through the mountains, which was surprising because we never get thunder. Then it dropped twenty degrees. If we were in the Midwest, I would have thought a tornado was coming! Instead we just got some light rain and lots of big lightning. This week has been crazy. My audition went really well, and it was funny because I was playing a 16-year-old and was surrounded by teenagers and their parents. I felt so old! Last night I watched Law and Order: SVU and the new Law and Order: Los Angeles. I love SVU because Mariska Hargitay and Christopher...

Kale, Corn, and Maitake Stir-Fry

Image
I had a wilty-looking bunch of kale and a somewhat old corn on the cob in the fridge yesterday so I made a nice stir-fry. I first put in a bunch of garlic, my remaining maitake mushrooms and cut the corn off the cob right into the pot. Then I tore the kale off and added it and seasoned it all with some Caribbean jerk seasoning. Then I ate half of it it like colcannon, mashed with a potato and nutritional yeast. In the afternoon I went with my dad to Home Depot because he needed to buy some crown molding for his room. It was 17 feet long and he just stuck it out the back of his truck! After this picture was taken he tied it together with orange bungee cords so it would be visible to traffic but it still felt like a pretty silly thing to do. For dinner I made myself a lovely salad and talked to my mom on Skype! There's lettuce, radishes, carrots, mixed beans, parsley, chives, and red bell pepper, and I ate it with more Indian curry hummus. Today I had the rest of my kale/corn/mush...

Instant Colcannon

Image
I hope everyone had a great 4th of July! I know I did. And my mom baked this vegan cake and sent me an e-mail picture of it. She said she baked it for me and would eat it for me, too. I have a great, super-easy recipe to share with you today! Instant Colcannon 1 organic potato several cups of kale nutritional yeast salt, pepper, seasonings Here's what you need: First, scrub your potato. If it has any imperfections or little sprouts, just dig them out with your fingernails. It's easy. And always buy organic potatoes - they're on the dirty dozen and they're root vegetables, so they just suck up all the pesticides. Poke the potato several times with a fork and microwave for about three minutes, longer if it's a big potato. While your potato is microwaving, boil a couple of inches of water in a pot or pan. Put in your steamer basket and steam several cups of kale for about 30 seconds. This will make your kale softer and bright green, but minimize cooking time. ...

Food Diary

I've always been interested -- in that strange, perverse way that only seems to affect women -- in what other people eat every day. So, I'm going to start posting my daily food diary. I'll try and take pictures, though I didn't today. Breakfast: 2 sweet potatoes Snack: Banana Lunch: Colcannon (potatoes and kale) Dinner: Salad with mango salsa, colcannon Dessert: Sweet potato Here's a good article from McDougall about weight loss. I think it includes some really good principles: http://www.nealhendrickson.com/mcdougall/021100puweight.htm

New Bed!

Image
I love my new bed. It's a Hillsdale day bed with a pop-up trundle, so it's a twin bed that can become a queen bed and can also serve as a couch. I was planning on using it as a twin most of the time because it takes up almost my whole room but it feels so luxurious to have a big bed that I think I'm going to keep it popped out. Here's a picture where you can see the two beds. I put a foam cushion covering the two beds so now I can't even feel the crack between the beds. I had a good phone interview today for an interesting job. Next up is an interview in person. So that's good! I stuck with the Mary's Mini and had colcannon for dinner. I made it out of about four potatoes and a bunch of kale, some nutritional yeast, a little rice milk, and Bragg's. I had a couple of bowls.
