Halloweeeen

OMG it's November! My life is speeeeeding by. The weekend was good. Friday night we had a pumpkin carving party, but instead of carving pumpkins I dressed up as a cheerleader and played pinball. Saturday was really busy - acting-wise I had an audition at 10 and rehearsal for Big Shoes to Fill (the student film I'm doing in a couple weeks) from 1-3 at Loyola Marymount. In between I went to Claire's to buy something for my new costume.... Willow Smith! If you haven't seen her music video Whip My Hair, check it out: She's Will Smith's 9-year-old daughter and she is hella talented. After rehearsal I got ready and then went out with my friends and whipped my hair a lot. On Sunday I filmed Wacky Wednesday (the USC grad film I booked this week) from 10-5:30. I played a 16-year-old fighting with my mom. It was fun! Every day I get to work just makes me wish I could work every day. I managed to keep eating healthy all weekend and I mostly subsisted off of the br...

New Shoes, Odds and Ends

My Peanut Butter Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies were a huge hit! One of my friends actually said they were the best cookies she had ever eaten. Not kidding. My weekend was fun! I had a callback on Saturday morning - I'm one of two girls still in the running, so we'll see. Then I partied hardy for about 12 hours. And then I felt like crap on Sunday! That's when you repeat, "You're only young once" over and over. But I did end up with these sweet-ass 2 AM Sharpie tats. That's a tiger fighting a dragon one on arm and a pegleg pirate on the other. I had an audition on Sunday and then napped a lot and today I had another audition and then I went to Target. I haven't cooked any meals lately so I'm just going to share random things I've bought! First up, TJ's was selling entire branches of brussels sprouts. Sooo I had to buy one. Coool! Oh yeah, and look how well my plants are doing (they're a month old now )! They're growing gr...

Cheap Brussels Sprouts, Raw Corn Salad, and Religion on "Glee"

It's blustery out there, folks. I've been wearing my hat and scarf inside all day. But I have a bucket full of good news! 1) I booked a job! I'll be shooting a student film on Friday and Saturday. 2) I got a cool audition on Friday and I get to use a Southern accent. Fun. 3) CSI is filming right outside my apartment tomorrow and we got warned that there will be fake gunfire. I plan on trying to spy. 4) Ralphs had brussels sprouts on sale for $1.50/pound. I bought all of these for about five bucks. I hadn't even planned on buying brussels - I just made a quick Ralphs stop for some Granny Smith apples last night (apples are my favorite part of fall, hands down) but I couldn't pass up that price. I put my keys next to the bag so you could tell just how big it really is. I roasted them with some 21 Seasoning Salute, garlic and onion powder, and garam masala at 450 for 20 minutes and then 500 for 10 minutes. So good. Add a little BBQ and nooch if you want a true...

Barney's Favorite Pasta

Today was great! Not really in my personal life, because I didn't do anything special. But I'm really excited for two great events today: 1) My little brother got his pilot's license! He passed his test and the guy who gave him his test even said that he is well above average in his skills and should look into a career in aviation. I am so happy for him and proud of him, I can't even tell you. He's only 19 and this is such an accomplishment. 2) Prop 8 was ruled unconstitutional! This isn't the end of the road, but at least the judge declared that there is no reasonable justification to deny homosexual couples the right to marry. Yay for equality. =) Food Diary: Breakfast: Miso soup, steamed broccoli Lunch: Brussels sprouts Snack: Romaine salad with peach salsa and homemade Rawmesan Dinner: Barney's Zucchini Pasta, frozen blueberries I had the world's biggest brussels sprouts. Honestly I think the bigger the brussel, the tastier. Check that out! F...

Peach and Pineapple Salsas

Image
Well I've had a busy couple of days, and tomorrow will be no different! Yesterday I spent most of the day hanging out at my friends' house, and for dinner my lovely host made me this salad: There's lettuce, chopped veggies, and some chickpeas. Instead of dressing I used horseradish mustard and lots of fresh cracked pepper. YUM. I love good mustard and I definitely need to get myself a pepper grinder. Today I cooked, went to Power Group, and went to a talk by a casting director. Both events were through The Actors Network. Power Group is a group of actors that get together every month and talk about what they did for their careers in the past month, goals for next month, and then issues they need opinions on. Food Diary for today - Breakfast: Spinach salad Lunch: Brussels sprouts, 1/2 sweet potato Dinner: Brussels sprouts, coffee I know spinach salad is a strange breakfast food, but I'm a strange girl. Lately I have been loving salad with peach or pineapple salsa...

Six Bags of Brussels Sprouts. No Joke.

Image
I made another Trader Joe's run yesterday to get more brussels sprouts. And I got SIX BAGS. It turns out brussels sprouts are an entire dollar per pound cheaper at TJ's than at Whole Foods or Ralph's. They cost $2.99/lb at WF and Ralph's and only $1.99/lb at TJ's. But it does drive me crazy that at TJ's they come in plastic bags and you can buy them in bulk at the other stores. Plus, TJ's is a little bit out of walking distance if you're carrying groceries. But a dollar a pound difference is just too huge. That means I saved six bucks. That's big money! The cashier commented on my six bags of brussels and I told her that I just really love them, I eat them for dinner, and they're my favorite food. We both laughed that I'm probably the only person on the planet whose favorite food is brussels sprouts. But maybe there is someone, and I hope to meet that soulmate someday. So here's my TJ's stash: On the right you'll see some ...

Kelp Noodle Stir-Fry, Why Brussels Sprouts are AWESOME, and Skype Time

Image
So! It's been a few days since I blogged, mostly because I've been a very boring eater. Brussels sprouts, potatoes mashed with kale, and broccoli/mushroom/okra stir-fries. You get the picture. Here's something I made the other day: It's a kelp noodle stir-fry! So, what are kelp noodles and why are they so great? Well, I'm glad you asked. Kelp noodles are just made out of kelp, so they're a whole plant food and they're raw. They're a good raw and low-calorie version of pasta - they are ridiculously low in calories, like 7 calories a cup or something. But the weird thing is that they have a strange crunchy texture that can be rather off-putting. The way to get rid of this texture and make soft noodles is to soak the noodles in something acidy. I tried this before with lemon water, but I hate it when my food tastes like lemons. So this time I tried something different - I put them in a jar with tomato sauce and let the sauce soften up the noodles....
